Apparently Jack Black wasn’t the first choice to play Steve in A Minecraft Movie – that honour fell to What We Do in the Shadows star Matt Berry.
Berry was all set to play Steve, but had to bow out of the role after post-Hollywood strike scheduling conflicts – namely, recording the last season of What We Do in the Shadows (source: Puck), which ran from winter 2023 through to spring. A Minecraft Movie started shooting in January 2024.
A Minecraft Movie has had the biggest opening weekend of any video game adaptation, and it’s doing pretty well with Black – who really brings the energy – in the role. However, you can’t help but wonder what the movie might have been like if things had worked out differently.
Of course, it would have meant Steve having the classic Matt Berry voice, which… may have split the audience a bit.
HOWEVER, eagle-eyed fans have noticed that Berry does kind of show up in the movie, in the form of a very clever Easter egg. So, I guess there’s that.
Here’s what Black had to say about the character: “Steve’s a blank slate. I feel like it could have been almost any actor. I loved that I got to play him and put my stamp on it.”
What are your thoughts about Matt Berry originally cast to play Steve? Are you sorry you missed out on his take on the character?
