Raptr is more than a chat client for games. The software sits on your PC and monitors the games you play, recording your game selections and sharing that with the community. In fact, the whole Raptr platform plugs into your Xbox Live and PlayStation Network profile too. The result? It’s able to connect you to gamers of similar tastes, let you see what your friends are up to, offer that community and even help you decide what games you might want to play next.
There’s been some bother with the latest update to the PC software. At first I thought the annoyance was that it looked like I’d need to reconnect all my profiles. That was until AVG flagged a virus.
Oh-uh.
I’m not dismissive about this sort of thing (check out the Sucuri scan for Geek Native, that’s paid for monitoring to ensure this site is safe) but I was sure I didn’t have a virus. I’m careful.
Burn, an admin from Raptr, commented on their forums to say;
Update your virus definitions, we contacted AVG about this, and it is a false positive.
That comment, though, was three weeks ago.
Today there’s been a rush of new comments from other users who are being told that uninstall.exe may be infected by unknown virus.
The problem may not be restricted to AVG. Writing o n thesame forums, Raptr user Mursu notes;
Don’t know if related but F-Secure Internet Security 2011 says latest update.exe file is malware and quarantines it.
Right now it’s likely that Raptr does not have a virus. If it does – then Raptr has a huge PR issue on their hands as it would have likely come from their software update. We just don’t know for certain at this stage. Raptr will, hopefully, move as quickly as the anti-virus software vendors allow to clarify the problem.
