Marvel have confirmed that they will release a Guardians of the Galaxy movie in August 2014. The comic series is likely not as well known as names like Captain America for the “mainstream audience”. In some ways the superhero team could be considered “Avengers in Space”. Indeed, after the second generation Guardians of the Galaxy was cancelled in April 2010 they later appeared, reassembled, in Avengers Assemble #4 in June 2012.
The second generation Guardians of the Galaxy is a series by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. This is the same Dan Abnett that Geek Native was able to interview about the Primeval book, Extinction Event, he is the author of.
We have some concept art for the movie already.
So, based on this art – who’s made the movie? At this point the question only applies to which superheroes are in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. It’s far too early to speculate on actors – but we might even wonder whether many actors will be used or whether this will be a highly CGI affair.
From left to right, we see Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon and Gamora.
The full Guardians of the Galaxy team, like The Avengers, is larger than that. Heroes like Bug, Cosmo, Jack Flag, Moondragon and others are included but the five shown above will be more than enough for the film.
Drax the Destoyer
Drax was a human called Arthur Douglas – but he was attacked and killed by Thanos. Thanos is a mutant alien who features, very briefly, as the evil power behind the throne in The Avengers movie. It was Thanos who had given Loki the alien Chitauri army. The Titan god Chronos, in need of someone to battle Thanos, places Arthur Douglas’ spirit in a powerful new body. He becomes the superhero Drax the Destroyer with superhuman strength, speed, durability, energy blasts, the ability to sense Thanos and skilled in knives.
Groot
Groot, the Monarch of Planet X, is a living tree. He is a plant monster who has fought humans and has been captured by S.H.I.E.L.D. Along the way, Groot has become a more friendly figure and has fought against Thanos. He has genius level intelligence, is resistant to fire, can control trees and boost his strength and regeneration by absorbing wood.
Star-Lord
There are a few Star-Lord variants but the first is an anti-social astronaut called Peter Quill. Quill effectively steals the title Star-Lord by pretending to be someone else and being gifted his suit and ship from an alien known as “Master of the Sun”. Thanks to his suit he enjoys super strength, the ability to fly and his gun blasts elemental bullets (fire, earth, water or air).
Rocket Raccoon
Rocket Raccoon is a space captain from the planet Halfworld. Halfworld was an abandoned colony for the mentally ill where animals had been genetically manipulated to grant human intelligence and bipedal body constructions so they could look after the inmates. Rocket was the planet’s chief law officer. Rocket does not have super powers as such. He has raccoon like acute smell, sight, hearing and touch. He’s a good pilot, an excellent marksman and a solid tactician and leader.
Gamora
Gamora is the last of her race, the soul survivor of an extermination campaign by the Universal Church of Truth. He is also Thanos’ adopted daughter. Trained as an assassin and rebuilt as a cyborg, Gamora has enhanced speed, strength, agility and durability. She is a highly trained martial artist.
