There is a Shadowrun computer game in the works that will allow players to influence what happens in the Shadowrun tabletop RPG. Perhaps.
Shadowrun Online is a Kickstarter project from Cliffhanger Productions. It’s a bold one and I suspect it’ll be a close call. They’re asking for $500,000 for success. At the time of posting they have 166 backers, for $10,973 and have 27 days to. At this rate they’ll need just shy of $20,000 a day to succeed.
Does $20,000 a day sound like a lot? Shadowrun has history on Kickstarter. Shadowrun Returns asked for $400,000 and made $1,836,447. It was headline success.
The question is – are we at our Shadowrun limits? Has Ouya, now over $5m, gobbled up all our Kickstarter cash for the month?

There’s no doubt that the team, Cliffhanger, has history in the space. They’ve worked on Diablo 2, Farcry, Risen, World of Warcraft and Jagged Alliance Online which is impressive. That’s just a sample too.
As with Kickstarter projects its clear that the team have put a lot of their own personal effort into the project. We’re talking about people who have mortgages invested in the game.
The great strength of the game seems to be the persistence. Roleplayers will like this. Your actions have an impact on the world. You matter. This will be especially interesting if the online, in-game, actions are mirrored in the tabletop RPG mythology.
At the time of posting – I’ve not become a backer. I’m cautious of MMORPGs, especially free-to-play ones, because of the time sink – I’d back the game to have a character drawn after me or something named after me but I’d have to ignore lots of free subscription offers first. Which seems like a waste.
It would be great to find out whether any of Geek Native’s supporters become backers. Have you?
This will be such a close call, I think, that putting the widget that tracks the project’s funding to this post seemed like a useful thing to do.
