The British newspaper The Mirror ran a large story claiming that Matt Smith had quit his role as the Doctor in Doctor Who. His contract expires at the end of 2013, despite this, The Mirror used comments Smith made to Empire magazine to justify their claim.
In Empire, Matt Smith had said;
“I don’t think you can sustain it. Tom Baker did it in different circumstances. I couldn’t do this for seven years. I’d be run into the ground. I don’t think you can sustain it.
“And your life outside of it is… I don’t know. I hope I don’t sound too pessimistic.
“It’s just I don’t think my body or my life or the people around me could sustain it.”
The timing of The Mirror’s article is likely due to the fact that the first episode of the new season of Doctor Who airs in the UK, US and Canada today. Matt Smith, of course, is the Doctor in Asylum of the Daleks.
Yesterday, on Twitter, Sam Hodges who is the Head of Communication at the BBC denied the report.
#DoctorWho fans – Matt Smith hasn’t quit. See him in Asylum of the Daleks, tomorrow at 7.20 on#BBC1— Sam Hodges (@Sam_Hodges) August 31, 2012
Do you think Matt Smith will (or should) stay on into 2014?
