Anton Arcane first appeared in Swamp Thing volume 1, issue 2 back in 1972. He was a scientist and a sorcerer who was obsessed with immortality. He created monterous undead known as “Un-Men”. As any scientist sorcerer obsessing over living forever in comic books is prone to doing – he had died several times. His return to life has even included seducing his way out of Hell and becoming a demon.
But that was the old Swamp Thing series.
As part of the New 52 initiative from DC the Swamp Thing series has started again. The Swamp Thing is an incarnation of The Red and The Green and Arcane is an incarnation of The Rot. This Swamp Thing, Alec Holland, has been the only avatar to escape the Rot so far and Arcane has been incredibly successful at killing them.
