James Lantz’ Mercury is an impressive game. It started out simple; one character class and one monster. It has grown. Every few days, whoever has the top score, gets to add a little bit to the game.
Now the game has 20 or so monsters and about 15 different character classes.
In the graphic above a “Hovering Fedora”, which is very hard to hit, is chasing the player (the letter A).
Lantz told Buzzfeed;
“I just had no control over anything that was coming into the game,”
“Half the people I talked to said, ‘you’re going to have a bunch of dick monsters.'”
That doesn’t seem to have happened.
According to Lantz, who is just 22, the game is an experiment in balance. After all, it’s the players who are adding the monsters and creating the eco-system so it is the players who are setting the challenge level.
In this graphic the while skull is a Ghost which freezes the player until it runs out of HP. In Mercury players can loose by running out of turns.
