This is a beautiful beast of a book. It’s huge. There are 544 pages, in colour, in a hardback that just oozes quality. Right now, Amazon is accepting pre-orders and the book is due out at the end of September in the UK and the beginning of October in the US.
That timing is important because, easily, this is an ideal book for the present giving season at the end of the year. It’ll appeal to Firefly and Serenity fans. It’ll appeal to Josh Whedon, Nathan Fillion and Jewel Staite fans, of which are there legion. In fact, go through the whole cast; adding Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Summer Glau, Morena Baccarin, Ron Glass, Adam Bladwin and all the rest and this anniversary edition of Firefly – A Celebration has mass appeal.
But what’s inside?
Pull open the covers of this foil-stamped book to reveal treasures like rare photographs, pieces of production art and new stories from the series writers. Many of these items cannot be found anywhere else.
I especially liked the production art. I felt these pieces helped connect me better to the Firefly world. As I flicked through the large book it really did feel as if I was browsing something exclusive; something special.
The book also has interviews with Joss Whedon, the series crew and, of course, the cast members.
Real fans may well enjoy the uncut scripts from the series most of all. I’ve certainly been in debates on how exactly the quotes go or what exactly someone muttered – and this bible of Firefly lore is now on hand to answer those questions.
Lastly, did you know Doctor Who star David Tennant was a fan? He said; “I love Firefly, I love Serenity. They’re excellent.” It’s only conjecture but I can quite imagine someone giving him a copy of the book for a present.
Are you a Firefly fan? What was your favourite scene from the series?
My copy of the book was provided by the publisher for the purposes of review.
