Anime Limited, the latest anime buyer and disbutor in the UK, has published the top ten best selling anime titles in the UK in January.
In an earlier post they shared the top 10 for 2012 and gave very rough estimates of the number of units shipped. The post suggests demand for Anime DVDs and blu-ray in the UK exceeds 130,000 units a year.
It showed that Canal UK and Manga UK battled for control of the market, with Manga UK having the lion share, but without any other companies featuring.
The January charts are a little different. Kaze features and Anime Limited won’t even hint at the sales. I wonder if there was an objection.
Rank | Title | Label |
1 | Origin – Spirits of the Past | Manga UK |
2 | Dragonball Z – Complete Season 5 | Manga UK |
3 | The Girl Who Leapt Through Time | Manga UK |
4 | My Neighbour Totoro | Canal UK |
5 | Ghost in the Shell 2.0 | Manga UK |
6 | Arrietty | Canal UK |
7 | Akira | Manga UK |
8 | Bleach Complete – Series 9 | Kaze |
9 | High School of the Dead | Manga UK |
10 | Spirited Away | Canal UK |
This is a big assumption but if we assume the number 1 seller (Origin – Spirits of the Past) had the same sales ratio to the number 2 title (Dragonball Z – Complete Season 5) as the overall 2012 charts show then we could attempt to calculate the UK marketshare for the month.
It looks very different. Manga UK has boomed while Kaze looks to be eating at Canal’s number 2 position.
