This Kickstarter campaign from Jason Pitre and Genesis of Legend has raised $5,300 with 24 days to go (at the time of publishing). That’s enough to push beyond the $4,000 campaign goal. Unless there’s a wave of cancellations this game will Kickstart. This means there’s a bunch of savvy gamers who’ll now step forward with pledges as they look to get in on the Kickstarter deal.
I’m sure I’m more new school than old school in my gaming flavour. If the OSR is about quick pick up characters and action adventures and new school is more about storytelling and drama then I’m certainly the latter. Spark RPG, though, may be too far to the extreme in the new style. Jason Pitre claims the game is about challenging my beliefs.
I think any game can do that. You could be using Fighting Fantasy mechanics and face the debate whether to leave safety to investigate the cries for help or you could be in a Dungeons & Dragons Basic game when you see what a fellow adventurer does when given the power to instantly slay all orcs in a world.
The fact that the Spark RPG lets you create your own worlds for this and comes with three playable settings of its own it bound to be attractive to some gamers though.
Neonihon – Shogunate Science Fiction is a setting where a Japanese colonization ship landed on the planet Shi Tateyama. Shi Tateyama has huge mountains and corrosive tempests and so a class of peasant farmers were genetically engineered to survive the extremes and provide to the mountaintop colonies.
Quiet Revolution – Montreal Police Drama is a gritty, contemporary police drama. Players have to try and resolve problems in the community and those culture clashes without things getting violent.
The Elemental Kingdom – Elemental Fantasy is set ina Kingdom under siege. Elemental monsters threaten to overwhelm the defenders and only the four Elemental Orders and their corrupt magic have any chance of avoiding total destruction.
