Do you suspect you would enjoy Tekken and the in-game mythology that’s built up over the years if you could only avoid the horror of the button mash. I don’t mean randomly pumping the console controller, I mean learning the complex, button bashing, sequences that you need to muscle memory out in order to play the game against someone else?
I suspect Namco Bandai feels like there may be many of us. It’s also the case that early Tekken adopters are busy folk now and need a mobile game, something that fits into their pocket.
Step forward Tekken Card Tournament. This game is free to download from Google Play, iTunes and Amazon. You can even point your web browser at Card-Tournament.com/tekken for a free game.
This is a turn based, collectible card game. This is a game of marshalling your resources and out thinking your foe.
Physical booster packs of game cares are due to arrive in stores soon. Don’t expect them to be free. This, of course, is the challenge that CCGs face that beat ’em ups avoid. With the CCG there’s always the risk that who ever is prepared to spend enough, create the best deck, will be the winner.
Most CCGs don’t get this level of technology. Tekken Card Tournament has augmented reality, QR code scanning and a host of clever ways to keep it engaging. I suspect there may well be debate around the use of bikini clad babes as collectibles.
I may still be swithering whether Tekken and its universe really is for me but I’m pretty impressed by the concept of this tournament, I think it points to a future that would be quite fun and it’s taking multimedia to the next level. I hope it does well.
