I’ve seen some bold attempts to bring game-changing tech to the tabletop roleplaying hobby via Kickstarter before. Some look great. Some, I think, look like dead projects walking. Then there’s the GameChanger from Richard Woodfield and Splendiferous Press. Frankly I’m not sure what to make of this one. So here’s the pitch video, with loud music, and you can have a ponder too.
This is the first Kickstarter I’ve seen that has options for people with own spare 42″ flat TV ready to be coverted. It sounds crazy but it probably is a sensible pricing structure. Who would want to buy a product like this if they did already have a spare monitor.
As it stands now the early bird options are still open for backers. This means for £365 you can bag yourself a £35 discount and a complete 32″ GameChanger. This is the fully assembled, screen and all, piece of techology. Splendiferous are spot on to point out this is less than many tablets cost.
I think the idea is solid. Give me something that I can put away – even if it’s back behind the sofa – when I’m not gaming. Give me something that’s robust enough to be used in a group and the video showing the pint balanced on the screen is a good move with that in mind. Give me something that I can use my current RPG trappings with.
My worries? This is a big investment. I’ve no idea how heavy this. Shipping out of the UK for only £35 suggests the GameChanger isn’t a dead weight.
Did anyone get a peak at the UK Games Expo? What do you think? Is this the next evolution of tabletop gaming?
