Imagine a future in which the police could read your mind. This is a peaceful future, everyone has jobs that suit their skills and there is hardly any crime.
There’s hardly any crime because the police and authorities actively scan your thoughts. While they do what they can to encourage you to be happy and provide for your needs in this future it is illegal to think about committing a crime.
How does this future sound to you? Heaven or hell?
This is the future explored in the anime Psycho-Pass. In the series we follow a young cop and new to her role as a police detective in this apparently peaceful future. As you would expect our hero finds all the sinister sides.
In a competition to win a copy of the anime Geek Native ran a simple poll with two questions. Are you an anime fan? Would you love or hate such a future? This isn’t a scientific poll as there was a prize and it gathered about 50 entries. However the results are in.
Nearly 65% of respondents would welcome this future. They would sacrifice their “freedom” to think about committing a crime in return for peace.
When we study the breakdown of results we can see that anime fans are even more willing to make the trade.
Are you surprised by the results?
How would you vote? Would you welcome a peaceful future that was achieved by the police routinely scanning for criminal intent among people’s thoughts?
