The short film has had a good year. There have been some pretty impressive videos on YouTube, Vimeo and elsewhere on the web this year. Loads. It would have been easy to miss out on some of the best.
This top 10 list is videos that Geek Native have shared this year. These might or might not be videos made or published this year but they’re ones that appeared on this blog this year. These are 10 short films you don’t want to miss.
#10: Great Martian War
Reminds me very much of War of the Worlds meets Achtung! Cthulhu. Great special effects, not really a plot which is why this otherwise remarkable video comes in at position 10.
Watch Great Martial War.
#9: Dark Noir
A private eye with the ability to see demons. Could be useful in his trade?
Watch Dark Noir
#8: Prospect
A sci-fi Western dealing with the tricky issue of prospecting on alien planets.
Watch Prospect.
#7: Dragons and Demons – Thronelander
A short film based on a Swedish RPG. That’s exactly the sweet spot for Geek Native and luckily the video is pretty good too.
Watch Thronelander.
#6: Black Sugar
It’s not possible to watch Black Sugar without thinking Lovecraft. There’s a healthy dose of John Dies at the End too.
Watch Black Sugar.
#5: Mis-Drop
Clever use of very little. Watch through the eyes of a “loss adjustor” trying to assess the claims on this sci-fi war.
Watch Mis-drop.
#4: PostHuman
NSFW but fun. All the action as assassins battle for control of future fringe science.
Watch PostHuman.
#3: Mean Teddies
Watch if the humble teddy bear was actually a ruthless killing machine?
Watch Mean Teddies.
#2: A Tale of Momentum & Inertia
A comedy short with a meaningful message. Think before you get all aggressive.
Watch A Tale of Momentum & Inertia.
#1: Backbone
I’d argue that this animation is a surprise choice for the #1 position. It’s not well known and is a class proejct. It sticks in my mind as a short film that oozes RPG inspiration, though.
Watch Backbone.
If you’re bored this Christmas and are looking for something to watch then hopefully this list will help. If not then there’s a large collection of other short films and animations which might help.
