The BBC’s turning the corner on two fronts; it’s getting back into games production and its going to allow Doctor Who to be included in the new generation.
The Beeb canned their game making multimedia division in 2005 and haven’t done anything since. They’ve also been extremely protective of the Doctor Who license and we’ve seen a Top Trumps: Doctor Who that Eidos managed to put out in 2008 but that’s about it.
UK game retailer news site MVC has the insider contacts on this one and Dave Anderson, head of multimedia development at BBC Worldwide, has been speaking to them exclusively. He’s said;
“We’re having a lot of interesting discussions for a variety of ideas around Doctor Who that are complementary to each rather than in competition with each other – boxed product console games, virtual worlds and other experiences.
“The deals we are looking at are in different spaces, probably looking at overlapping but different audiences and are certainly delivering a different kind of experience.
“The Doctor Who audience who love that show want to have different experiences around it and it has a huge shelf life going back 47 years – it’s about managing and satisfying expectations of both older and younger audiences.”
