Today Geek Native and over 600 other members of the RPGBA discovered that the community would close.
The RPG Blog Alliance came about after RPGbloggers.com changed hands and delays began to mount. Bonemaster, aka Jeff Brissette, thought there was a better way to bring RPG blogs into a community and help share their content. Writing from scratch and using some code libraries the RPGBA was born.
The core of the site acted as a large directory of RPG blogs, listing their latest content, helping to connect readers to writers. It housed a RPG blog carnival – currently hosted by John Fourr of Roleplaying Tips.com – and powered the @RPGBlogAlliance Twitter account.
Bonemaster has made the decision not to renew the domain when it expires in April. Why? He felt the community aspect never took off and that the traffic referrals from the project to the blogs that took part were too small.
Traffic from the Twitter account, of course, would be hard to track.
The site had had some battles on the way; Brissette successfully fought of two hacking accounts, two disruptions of the Twitter account and other minor code issues.
The code is not in shape, says Jeff, to pass on to anyone else but the door is open for someone to start from scratch.
If you’re in need of joining a RPG blog community or looking for some RPG blogs were should you turn?
It may surprise some but there is a large amount of RPG chat on Google+. Two communities I recommend are:
Roleplaying Games
Join here
Nearly 10,000 members and a strict no-spam rule help keep this community lively without being flooded. RPG bloggers are strongly encouraged not to dump and drop their content but to participate.
Pen & Paper RPG Bloggers
Join here
Under 2,000 members, perhaps a touch more of the dump-and-drop content but not too much. This is a community specifically for those who run blogs.
Others
There are a few Reddit communities and Flipboards worth keeping an eye on too;
- /r/rpg
- /r/RPGhumor
- Flippin’ the Tabletop (may not load on desktop)
