Tabletop gaming is a hugely accessible hobby as the most important ability is your imagination. That said, those with visual difficulties aren’t always fond of dice heavy systems with hard to read dice. Wouldn’t it be cool if your d20 spoke, out aloud, the number it had just rolled?
The details of the project are available at Adafruit and makes use of an Arduino. At a glance I know the build is beyond me but I rather like the fact the audio files have been made available at Github.
There’s some important tips over at Adafruit; such as not using JB Weld for this project as it contains metal particles… which isn’t great when elsewhere in this project you’ll be using magnets.
The magnets look to be the real challenge and the tutorial suggests you’ll have to get an idea for the strength of each and that the project may therefore take a few days to complete. Nevertheless, this is fiercely impressive stuff. Perhaps we’ll see commercial variants in the future?
