CBS is bringing Star Trek back. Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote and produced the 2009 Star Trek film with Roberto Orci and Star Trek Into Darkness, is acting as executive producer.
The brand new Star Trek is being made for CBS ALL Access. This is the US channel’s digital subscription service for video on demand and live streaming. In other words; this is CBS stepping up to address some of the successes Netflix has had winning geeky audiences over.
The show is due to start in January 2017.
CBS’ President, David Stapf, said;
“There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration,”
“Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”
Will the Star Trek come to the UK or elsewhere outside the United States? It might. CBS certainly would consider license rights and the official press release already hints at worldwide opportunities. Armando Nuñez, President and CEO, CBS Global Distribution Group noted;
“Every day, an episode of the Star Trek franchise is seen in almost every country in the world,”
“We can’t wait to introduce Star Trek’s next voyage on television to its vast global fan base.”
