Matt Knicl is an ex-Wizards of the Coast writer and creative who has worked on Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. His Kickstarter for a card based RPG called Tales of Arcana has, at the time of writing, a week to go and is close to funding. Find out more at the project page.
The game is free. You can download it now from the Tales of Arcana website. The Kickstarter is to raise funds to produce a printed version. A backing of $25 will get that for you, plus all the stretch goals, your name in the rulebook and Matt’s structured the tiers by geography.
Stepping up through the pledge levels gets you more copies of the cards. That’s part of the fun and challenge in a card based RPG. Play with lots of gamers? You may need lots of cards.
Speaking of the high level backers – there’s only 1 of the 4 original $1,000 slots which offer you the chance to work with the creator to design a one-shot story guide.
The stretch goals are set out already. The target for funding is $15,000 and at the time of writing the campaign needs a few thousand more. If it hits $20,000 in the last week rush then that’ll increase the number of cards in the Tales of Arcana pack to 144 and unlock give new races including kobold and manticore while pirate becomes available as a class. I suppose $25,000 is possible too which takes the cards up to 160 and unlocks the dark elf, zombie and luchador class.
