Tavern Tales is another RPG going for a Kickstarter birth. It’s done everything right so far; you can download the rules for free and check out the incredible art, or some of it, in advance. I spoke to Tavern Tales’ creator Dabney Bailey who confirmed the free rules download will last the duration of the Kickstarter. No mention of what happens afterwards so grab them quickly.

[Back this Campaign]
Bailey is asking for $19,500 to fund. The campaign launched this morning so has a full, fat, 30 days on the clock. $20 gets you a PDF copy and all digital stretch goals. $50 gets you the hardcover book and all the stretch goals. Shipping in the States is free.
There’s limited spaces available for people who want to pony up to and over $100. These levels unlock extras like design a monster or magic item. Heck. If you’re a Kickstarter guardian angel you can even pledge $1,000 and get to coordinate with an artist on a picture. Want to have your fiancé appear in an RPG as a heroic barbarian carrying you over one shoulder while she carries her mighty battle axe on the other? You can.
The art for the game, by the way, looks impressive. The samples we have below suggest a very high standard will be maintained.
In Tavern Tales character generation avoids the race and class combo we see so commonly elsewhere. Instead, characters are built around themes and you have full artistic freedom within that theme.
The core mechanic is 3d20. You use the middle dice unless it’s one of those situations that forces you to take the lowest or allows you to take the highest. That’s about it as the game wants to keep the focus on the cinematic rather than mathematic.
