Warner Bros are working on a live action movie for Akira but could they be up to anything else? The Hollywood Reporter thinks they might be. A live action Bleach movie.
The blog is reporting that Peter Segal (Get Smart, The Longest Yard, 50 First Dates) wants to produce (but not direct) Tite Kubo‘s classic manga.
It’s not hard to see why the big production houses might be interest. Superheroes have been hot; are hot, so why not try and do a superhero flick that appeals to the East and the West. Whereas Ichigo and the Shinigami’s battle against the Hollow isn’t really a superhero comic, I suspect it might look like one to some Hollywood bean counters.
Let’s look at some of the concerns. Peter Segal. Yeah. He’s the guy who does click flick comedies, isn’t he? That’s a concern. Okay. He might be looking to branch out (and I think Bleach is at its best when it is darkest) and he might be producing rather than directing but I’m still going to raise this as a concern.
Then there’s the Akira effect. Okay. Warner Bros has the rights to do a live action Akira. Where is it? They’ve had this “project” for years. Are they buying these rights up cheap, waiting until someone makes a successful adaption and then will they be prepared to push on with the films? Or are they just buying to block?
