Yesterday, Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition got two more official campaign settings. The Wayfinder’s Guide to Eberron brought the old Eberron setting back and the Guildmasters’ Guide to Ravnica took the established Magic: the Gathering setting and brought it over to D&D.
Both settings are different from the Forgotten Realms and ‘familiar’ locations like Waterdeep. Eberron, perhaps, is the most distinct and was initially designed as a bit of a mashup with something like D&D and a pulp adventure.
One advantage DMs have for Eberron is that roleplayers have been creating PCs and NPCs for Eberron for years. Some talented gamers have even shared their character portraits under a Creative Commons license on site like Deviant Art.
