Imgur user 1DM Magic shared their custom-made Dungen Master’s Guide. It is a book of beauty filled with rules (especially those which are easy to forget), tables, lists and maps.
The idea came from 1DM’s wish to have an easy to access and organised lists of names, riddles, magical items that were small enough to live behind the DM screen. When they needed to come up with an encounter on the fly, to build a challenge in response to something the players did, they would be able to reach for this perfectly designed asset collection.
So, 1DM did it themselves. They used InDesign from Adobe which is the choice of professional designers. That gives us as a clue as to why the final DM’s Guide was so good.
There’s bad news. There’s no way this perfect RPG accessory will go up for sale. It’s full of copyrighted works (though we’ve found a link to some public tables) and hundreds of dollars worth of cartography from Mike Schley.
An important purchase for 1DM Magic was from DM Leather Studio on Etsy. This shop sells, as you’d expect, distressed leather goods. A purchase like this Vintage A5 leather organiser would have been a flying start.
You can see the results of the InDesign work. This DM’s Guide isn’t a mismatch of charts and scribbled tables dumped into a ring binder. This is a designed product.
These chase rules are the work of the DnD Hackers Guild and are a few years old. But they’re still fun; a way to add fast and furious scenes much like as you could see in films or on TV.
