Monte Cook was a part of the team who worked on the third edition of D&D. He was even involved with D&D Next, the project that became D&D 5e, and was announced as lead designer in January 2012. A few months later, though, Cook quit Wizards of the Coast citing differences with the company.
Since then Cook has worked with Shanna Germain on Monte Cook Games projects such as Numenera, The Strange and The Cypher System.
This week Monte Cook Games has announced a new science fantasy setting for D&D 5e.
Arcana of the Ancients will be your comprehensive guide to bringing science-fantasy into your 5th-edition campaign. This hefty, hardcover book will be filled with creatures, devices, character abilities, technologies, tips, advice, and adventure. All fully compatible with 5E.
The Arcana of the Ancients setting will be introduced by a series of adventures for D&D Player Characters. PCs will discover relics that suggest there was once a civilisation so ancient that not even the dragons and long-lived elves of the contemporary world know anything about it.
As you would expect, as the secrets begin to untangle then dangers become to awaken and emerge. Strange and new-again creatures will arise and the champions of the day will find themselves unable to defeat then without the arcana of the ancients.
Arcana if the Ancients is Numenera
Monte Cook is not creating a new setting for D&D. He’s using Numenera. The site says;
The wonder and mystery of the Ninth World of Numenera is coming to your 5E game with Arcana of the Ancients.
Numenera is Earth a billion years into the future. The setting launched in 2013, re-launched in 2018 and together the core rules have sold over 80, 000 copies.
Launching with a Kickstarter
Arcana of the Ancients will pitch itself to gamers first with a Kickstarter in mid-March.
Monte Cook is good at Kickstarters. His Invisible Sun project raised $664, 274, Your Best Game Ever took in $581, 673 and Numenera 2: Discovery and Destiny raised an impressive $845, 2558 in pledges.
