Evil Hat has their standalone Fate powered Cthulhu game up on Kickstarter and it has an interesting twist. What if Cthulhu was like Skynet? It’s a thing from the future that sends agents back to the present in order to trigger the apocalypse it needs?
The Kickstarter, at the time of writing, has 22 days still to run and is a success. Nearly $49,000 has been pledged on the $20,000 goal. You can follow progress here on the campaign page.
Sadly, but understandably, Red Hat doesn’t send physical books outside of the US. It’s too expensive for them. If you’re not in the USA and want this game in print you’ll have to wait. Leisure Games have a pre-order page already.
The PDF of Fate of Cthulhu is available with a pledge of $20. The minute you make that pledge and become a backer you’ll get access to the prototype PDF. The hardcover becomes available at pledges of $35 and over.
Fate puts an emphasis on fiction rather than mechanics that simulate reality. It’s an RPG concept that rewards failure as much as success providing interesting stories are what you’re after.
In Fate of Cthulhu, the player characters are slowly corrupting. In exchange for this, these Cthulhu-host fighting heroes also have access to special powers. It’s a trade-off.
