I enjoyed the series Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. It’s zombies and steampunk laden with aspects of Attack on Titan. Well, the first series of Attack on Titan anyway.
A full-length feature, a sequel, to the series is currently running in Japanese cinemas. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: The Battle of Unato follows Mumei.
That trailer has some great dancing, incredibly well animated, but it’s hard to imagine the show is about a brutal struggle against the zombie plague and those traitors trying to harness it for their own good.
In the main show, the hero is a half-human zombie, a Kabane hybrid, called Ikoma who is an engineer working on anti Kabane (zombie) technology.
Mumei is the other hybrid whom we meet on the train that starts off the drama. While the series wraps up the immediate plot threads, the state of the world and the zombie infection remains unchallenged. It’s likely that’s what The Battle of Unato gears up to tackle.
