A lot of big names worked on this highly anticipated Marvel’s Avengers A-Day game. We’ve Marvel themselves, Square Enix, Crystal Dynamic, Eidos-Montreal, Crystal Northwest and Nixxes Software all on this project. They took the decision to have the Avengers look a lot like, but not like, their Marvel cinematic universe characters. Do you think this was a wise idea given we’re in a post-Endgame world?
But first, the trailer:
Billed as the definitive Avengers gaming experience, A-Day is action-adventure that combines cinematic storytelling with both single-player and coop modes.
The game kicks off at an event known as ‘A-Day’ when Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow and Thor (sorry Hawkeye) are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers HQ and experimental helicarrer in San Francisco. Terrorists attack, there’s a huge blast, and the Avengers are blamed.
You’ll see in the trailer that the Avengers are strongly reminiscent of the faces we’ve become accustomed to in the movies but are different. Marvel probably won’t have to pay the original actors and likeness fees, though this almost certainly isn’t a cost saving effort.
A scan of YouTube comments shows a mixed reaction. Some of the early uploads of this video have many hundreds of thousands of views already. There are certainly concerns that Captain America isn’t actually in the game. There are doubts over some of the voice acting. On the other side, isn’t it time to move away from the old characters? This game clearly isn’t in the main continuity of the movies so isn’t it a good idea to have a visual difference in the characters too?
What do you think?
Marvel’s Avengers: A-Day is due out on May 15th next year for the Stadia, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
