I heard the news on the grapevine;
Think Geek is shutting down and offering 50% off everything to clear the warehouse.”
That’s only partially true. They are offering 50% off everything, but they deny shutting down. Here’s what the Think Geek monkeys say;
IS THINKGEEK SHUTTING DOWN? Nope. On July 2nd, 2019, ThinkGeek.com will be moving in with our parent company GameStop. After this move, you will be able to shop a curated selection of unique items historically found on ThinkGeek.com via a ThinkGeek section at GameStop
The Think Geek “Geek Points” promotion is closing. You have until June 30th to spend them or they’ll be converted into an email coupon for GameStop.
While some aspects of Think Geek might be hanging around this move does not sound like a vote of confidence in the brand. It’s been demoted to just being a part of the GameStop site.
This European blogger knows Think Geek better than he knows the GameStop brand. GameStop, though, does have outlets in Ireland, which is more of an international footprint than Think Geek has. So how come Think Geek is so well known across The Pond? It’s unique, sometimes exclusive goodies, and its fantastic April Fool prank gifts. The Think Geek team did digital marketing well.
GameStops missed analyst expectations by about $90m in their last report, sending their shares into a nosedive. Sadly, Think Geek seems like part of the cost-cutting fightback.
Think Geek might not be shutting, as the plans are to keep its 40 stores open, but ThinkGeek.com is going, and that’s a real shame.
