Dyskami, the new and old owners of the iconic anime RPG “Big Eyes, Small Mouth” aka BESM today announced BESM Naked.
The idea behind BESM Naked isn’t just to show the front cover model wearing fewer clothes but to produce a simpler and cheaper game. Writing on their Facebook page, Dyskami explained;
We know that many anime and manga fans like to role-play (and cosplay) at conventions, and they may be inclined to play more often if a game was released that matched their interests and expectations. BESM Naked presents an intuitive rule system that’s easy to understand, and consequently it might be the exact product that turns otaku into gamers.
They describe BESM naked as being a “gateway product” suitable for anime and manga fans who might not want to pay for a detailed and complex RPG.
That said, BESM Naked is a full RPG. It just doesn’t have all the specific rules and options that BESM 4 and the Tri-Stat system.
Dyskami use the Jumping attribute to compare and contrast the two version of Big Eyes, Small Mouth 4. Here’s the Tri-Stat rules for Jumping;
Jumping [BESM 4e version] Cost: 1
Point/Level
Relevant Stat: Body
With a running start, a character can normally jump a distance in metres approximately equal to three-quarters their Body Stat (a quarter their Body Stat from a static position). With this Attribute, the character can jump great distances (and land without injury) but cannot actually fly. Jumping does not enable a character to exceed the character’s normal maximum running speed (or swimming speed for aquatic characters capable of leaping). Consequently, unless the character also possesses the appropriate Level of the Superspeed Attribute, long-distance jumps may require several round or minutes.
For example, a character with a Body Stat of 6 can normally sprint 18 metres/round (Body Stat x 3; see Character Movement) and jump approximately 4.5 metres with a running start. If the character with Level 2 Jumping (10 times the normal distance, or 45 metres) jumps their maximum distance of 45 metres, they will be airborne for approximately three rounds rather than finishing the jump in just one (since 45 ÷ 18 is approximately 3 rounds). The advantage to jumping rather than running, however, is that the character can ignore terrain and is not fatigued as the character would be if they had to run the same distance. See Jumping Distance for additional jumping rules.
Level 1 Jump up to 3 times normal distance
Level 2 Jump up to 10 times normal distance
Level 3 Jump up to 30 times normal distance
Level 4 Jump up to 100 times normal distance
Level 5 Jump up to 300 times normal distance
Level 6 Jump up to 1,000 times normal distance
Someone with jumping at level 6 can jump spectacular distances. In fact, that’s preciously what BESM Naked says. Here’s that game’s version of the same Ability.
Jumping (1) [BESM Naked version]
You can leap much farther distances than normal characters (and land without injury).
Level 1 Substantial distance
Level 2 Great distance
Level 3 Remarkable distance
Level 4 Fantastic distance
Level 5 Incredible distance
Level 6 Spectacular distance
Which, if any, of the two new Big Eyes, Small Mouths are you tempted by?
