There are few details except Sony telling some press outlets that they’ve commissioned a live action version of Final Fantasy.
We know that Hivemind is on board, that’s the company who did The Expanse and are making The Witcher adaptation, but that’s about it. It feels so early that we could still well be in the “We announced it as our contract said we had to, but we’re still not sure if we’re going to invest any more money” phase of any big budget project.
Of course, there’ve been two Final Fantasy feature-length animes before. Both strong-okays, neither a valid counter-response to the ‘curse of the computer game movie adaption’ pub chat.
According to the press release, the live action will be “the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict.” That makes sense. That’s a big part of almost every Final Fantasy.
The press release talks about the “live-action debut of Cid”. Now, as it happens, Cids pop up all over the place in Final Fantasy. This is supposed to be Final Fantasy XIV which means the Cid in question is Cid Garlond. I think he’s one of the better Cids.
The world of Final Fantasy XIV is Eorzea, and as per the game, it’s a big landscape with lots of interesting scenery and settings for adventures.
