In an AMA on the new Ingress community, days after the successful launch of Harry Potter: Wizards United, Niantic Employee account RedSoloCup said that level 17 is inevitable.
The new levels, beyond the current level cap of 16, are not a priority for Niantic. They’re still working hard on Ingress Prime, a version of their flagship game that isn’t popular but which will soon be the only version.
Here’s the question and response from the AMA;
Q: King0fHearts – Will there be a L17?
A: This has been asked and answered many times. But since this is the first time it has been asked on the forums it would be good to answer it again. There are no immediate plans to add new levels. The priority at the moment is feature parity and upgrading the servers to use the Niantic Platform. HOWEVER — we have absolutely talked about it. We recognize there will be a need at some point in time. We have brainstormed ideas on what that looks like. It is, in my opinion, inevitable that it will occur. I just cannot provide a timeline as to when.
That sounds like the planning stage and it sounds like something RedSoloCup is keen to get on with.
This isn’t the first time RedSoloCup has talked about the probability of there being new levels to the game. In May last year, ahead of the launch of Prime, community manager Andrew Krug (RedSoloCup) unofficially said Prime would roll out in two phases; client app first, then servers. After servers, they would be able to look at new levels.
Given Niantic have just bought a company in London, are busy setting up the office there and are looking for an EMEA salesperson, and they are working with Prime, Pokemon Go and Harry Potter it feels like they don’t have much capacity at the minute. Level 17 is coming, it is just likely to be some time away.
Are you still playing Ingress? Is level 17 good or bad news as far as you’re concerned?
