Oak Game Studio and Modiphius have a game that Geek & Sundry raved over called City of Mist.
Pitch-perfect blend of superhero and noir tabletop RPG… The mechanics are simple yet INCREDIBLY robust.”
It’s an Apocalypse World Engine powered game, and the Starter Set is free at DrivethruRPG.
It’s a generous starter set with 87-pages in it. That’s enough for all the basic rules and two sample adventures (or Cases as they’re known as in the game). The set also includes seven pre-genned heroes and four sample Crew Themes.
It’s an RPG about gritty detectives in a world in which city folk have access to mythical powers. City of Mist is a game that encourages cinematic roleplaying. The system works by invoking your character’s descriptive ‘Tags’ to trigger ‘Moves’ that kick butt and drive the story on.
City of Mist won Gold at the ENnies in ’16 and made an impact with its art and approach to noir. People in the city have powers, you see, but didn’t get much choice about it. The spirits of gods and legends inhabited them. Why isn’t everyone freaked out by this? The Mist covers things up. The Mist makes things look normal.
The City of Mist: Starter Set is free to download and check out yourself.
