There are a number of things about our Universe that still can’t be explained. Significant things.
Gravity, for example, doesn’t make sense when measured against the strong and weak nuclear forces and electromagnetism. Then there’s dark matter; why is the Universe expanding? Why is the Universe expanding at an increasing rate when gravity would cause the Universe to contract?
Nikodem Poplawski of Indiana University in Bloomington, a respected theoretical physicist, has a theory. If this Universe was trapped inside a wormhole between two others then we would begin to have answers. Gravity, for example, could be tracked back to a point where it did make sense in relation to nuclear forces and electromagnetism.
Needless to say this is a controversial theory. Poplawski, himself, admits there are many areas that need to be addressed – how the wormhole was created in the first place, for example. The findings are published in Physics Letters B today and will no doubt inspire further comment.
