Tale Spire is a very impressive virtual tabletop for RPGs that’s currently running a huge Kickstarter campaign. They still, at the time of writing, have 29 days to collect fund and have raised £137,000+.
Whereas more virtual tabletops tend to use tokens and present a birds-eye view of the map, Tale Spire’s project looks more like a computer game, down at eye levels with 3d models for minis.
The updates keep coming and the promises, yet to be fulfilled, grow. This is how detailed a cyberpunk combat scenario could be.
It’s just a demo, but it’s a timely one. Carbon 2185 is shipping, Cyberpunk RED jumpstart is out at Gen Con and Shadowrun launches then.
Shadowrun might be the best fit for this demo video has our punks seem to be fighting zombies.
Cyberpunk themed assets are a stretch goal for Tale Spire. They unlock at the $275USD or 2,336,160NOK mark (so many currencies!), and Kickstarter’s fx engine tells me they’re currently at 1,490, 000 or so. That’s a big leap, but there’s still a month of funding to go.
Gamers, I think, have become rightly cautious of software projects on Kickstarter. They promise much, but the failures outnumber the high profile successes. Tale Spire seems to have broken free of that trap and is now just picking up publicity and earning those pledges. However, if they over-promise, then there’s the risk that potential backers will become doubtful.
What do you think? Are you a Tale Spire convert and have you pledged? Or is there neither room nor need for another virtual tabletop solution in your life?
