Planet X Games have returned to Kickstarter for a mashup of heroic fantasy (D&D) and sci-fi adventure (grindhouse). It’s working. The campaign currently stands at 153% funded with 23 days remaining. You can check today’s total and the time left to join in at the campaign page.
A pledge of $14 (about £11) will get you the PDF of An Occurrence at Howling Crater and any stretch goals that are unlocked. Double that, and you’ll get the physical copy as well although it only ships to the United States.
This D&D 5e adventure has a UFO land in your fantasy world. It’s suitable for characters who are at levels 7, 8 or 9 but Planet X Games insist it is easy to scale up or down.
Needless to say, this style isn’t a natural fit for most people’s classic D&D games, but you’ll know your players well enough to decide whether you can pull it off. Or perhaps it can be a one-off or Halloween special.
The game includes maps and details of all three flours of the ship that crashed into Howling Crater centuries ago. You’ve information on the horrible Gristletown, home to the cannibal Wotts clan, that grew up nearby. There are two dozen new magical and technological devices, including the blastwarp crystal and the crater mutant food known as irraditated vittles.
It’s a shame about the lack of international shipping, but the postal rates in the US are known to be prohibitive for small companies. Planet X is looking to improve on their first Kickstarter. They note;
We learned quite a bit from our first Kickstarter regarding shipping our physical rewards and have done our very best to follow the advice and feedback of our customers (Thank you Bad Mike!) to improve the shipping experience in all areas. All packages will include backing board/support to make sure that every single package arrives flat and undamaged. You have our word… or I’ll make the walk of shame on a thousand 4-sided dice!
Are you tempted? Does b-movie sci-fi have any space for your heroic Dungeons & Dragons campaign?
