Wizards of the Coast just doubled the size of their new D&D playtest. They’re already testing new Monk and Barbarian subclasses. Now they’ve added a new Sorcerer and Warlock subclass.
These two new subclasses have a bit of a cosmic horror theme, they feel very Lovecraftian.
You can check out the new rules at this free rules brochure from WotC.
The Aberrant Mind Sorcerer
This Sorcerer is influenced by an alien monster like an aboleth or mind flayer.
That fits rather nicely with the mind flayer take over we’re being teased with in Baldur’s Gate III, but there’s something else about the Aberrant Mind Sorcerer that could hint at an altogether different D&D setting.
Aberrant Mind Sorcerers get access to Psionics. These Psionics are in addition to the usual sorcery spells and, as they level up, can be cast without spending a spell slot.
High-level Aberrant Mind Sorcerers develop natural armour, can teleport and warp reality.
It is purely speculation, but Psionics and the D&D Dark Sun setting are often linked.
The Lurker in the Deep
The Lurker in the Deep is a new patron for Warlocks. In this deal, the Warlock agrees to act as an agent for the patron in a world it does not have easy access to.
Warlocks who make the pack can summon tentacles. These tentacles can be used for attack or defence. At higher levels, aspects of the Lurker itself can be made manifest.
The Lurker Warlocks also get access to a teleport option too, using these alien tentacles to grab themselves and their allies, and then vanish entirely only to appear somewhere else.
