Last week, in my review of the sound but sometimes brutal Svilland the Viking fantasy campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons, I suggested that the publisher Dream Realm Storytellers was worth watching.
They’re back, again, and are working on another Fifth Edition Kickstarter. It’s not a campaign setting this time; it’s evil.
Corpus Malicious
The project is Corpus Malicious and it will hit Kickstarter on October 15th. There’s a Facebook Event set up to remind you.
Svilland was great value for money, it was relatively inexpensive and squeezed in plenty of content into relatively few pages for a campaign setting. The Corpus Malicious is going to be much larger; 400 pages of new content.
What’s going to be in the book? I think the headline is 35 new evil-natured archetypes.
Dream Realm Storytellers hope that the book will delve into the nature of evil and let players explore what it is like roleplaying characters from the other side of the moral war.
This can be tricky. Experienced DMs can probably point to occasions in which evil-aligned characters derailed the story or disrupted out of character harmony through their actions. It is yet to be seen whether Corpus Malicious will consider this aspect of evil and offer advice but the book is intended for players as well as DMs.
There are five new backgrounds, three new races and ten more feats. Each one is designed to double-down on that evil and help craft characters that feel suitably horrible, sinister or malicious.
Not surprisingly, there are also new monsters in the book. Ten in total along with 5 new villains. There are two new cults as well, either to join or for DMs to use as the lurking menace or overt threat in homebrew D&D games.
