In what might be one of the biggest RPG Kickstarters of the year, Magpie Games has easily sailed past $250,000 for a campaign they were asking $10,000 for. In the first week.
The game in question is the RPG adaptation of the board game Root. You can watch the money counter spill upwards in real-time over on the campaign page.
The woodland needs you but, thankfully, it turns out the woodland has many friends.
There’s a pay-what-you-want Root RPG Quickstart available on DriveThruRPG for now. That means you can pay $0.00 for the Quickstart. Geek Native likes to encourage people who are very seriously considering making a pledge to take that option. Otherwise, a few pennies or even a dollar or two for a curiosity peak or a backup for the group feels like a karmic thing to do.
In Root, unlike the board game, you’re not controlling armies. You’re managing an outcast from normal society, and you’re living in the space between those communities.
The game draws on inspiration like Watership Down, Mouse Guard, Redwall and The Guardians of Ha’Hoole and it uses a set of rules based on Powered by the Apocalypse.
Pledge tiers stretch up to $300 but you do not need to go that high. A pledge of $20 gets you two PDFs – that’s the core rules and the Travelers & Outsiders PDF (plus anything else that’s unlocked). Most backers have gone for this tier.
However, $40 gets you the core rules has a hardback and the Travelers & Outsiders as a PDF. The next hop takes you to $75 which is enough for both books in hardback, both books and all stretch goals in PDF.
