If you’ve ever poured your heart and soul (and perhaps bank account) into a game, you’ll know that the last step can be the most frustrating.
It can be frightfully hard to persuade people to try your game. Yeah, it’s the dreaded marketing.
The ad above is one that developer Fumb Games started to run after following some random advice from Reddit.
They were already doing better than most and were testing a joky pie-chart.
However, Reddit user InterestingFeedback wasn’t so supportive. They said;
It doesn’t even matter what you’re advertising, ads are the worst
You’d do better with a picture of a happy duck and tiny text at the bottom saying “product x now available. Consider buying product x”
That’s how we end up with a happy duck promoting product X.
Sadly for Fumb Games, and their Blacksmith – Merge Idle RPG, even the happy duck is struggling to impress. At the time of writing, only 42% of people had upvoted the quackster.
Geek Native, an ad-supported site, has a much kinder view on ads. Good ads that point to interesting products are a necessary part of the hobby.
Oh, and if you’ve been beaten up and let down by ads too many times in the past and have resorted to ad-blocking technology then, don’t worry, there’s always Patreon as a means to support sites.
Thank you!
