Honk! is a single-page RPG game from Alicia Furness. It’s usually $2, but as Furness is in a fundraising drive to pay for her cat’s, Kyoko, medical bills it has been marked down to $1.
It’s a simple game to fill out your positive reputation track before your negative reputation track fills. As you’re a goose, you only have four stats; Honk, Flap, Run and Grab. You’ve four points to assign to those four stats; 0, 0, -1 and 1 and these stats modify your d6 rolls.
There’s no GM required in Honk. Instead, players roll d6s to get the basics of a mission fleshed out and then cooperate to tell the story of how their geese get involved. Or goose. I’m not entirely sure whether the group each has a goose character or control one goose each. I’m not sure it matters.
In my sample mission, I had to help make tea, in the garden and with a cat. I decided that a cat would probably like some milk for her tea, and so, as I’m a helpful goose, I stole a carton for the cat. Sadly, I’m a fat goose with -1 in my Run skill, and when I rolled a 5 on my d6, that took my total down to 4. Failure. The housewife caught me with the stolen milk, and my negative reputation track went up by one.
Sorry cat.
Honk! is an incredibly simple game. Whether it’s played with a goose or with geese, it’s really about framing a narrative for you and friends to adlib to.
We had the crazy idea of keeping notes of the town we created and will be using it as a setting in a forthcoming Modern AGE adventure. We’ve turned Honk! into a most surreal town generator.
