The DMs Guild was today updated with a version of the Blood Hunter character class for D&D 5e. The author? Matthew Mercer of Critical Role.
Mercer notes that the Blood Hunter was the first class he ever created for the game and admits he had a lot to learn.
Originally, Mercer had to create the class for Vin Diesel. The famous actor was promoting the film The Last Witch Hunter and Geek & Sundry were hosting an one-shot called D&Diesel. The Blood Hunter was created for Diesel’s character, but Mercer was only allowed to know what was in the movie’s trailer.
Writing on the DMs Guild’s product page for the 2020 version of the Blood Hunter, Mercer explains he winced when he finally gave into demands and released that version of the class. Since then, thanks to lots of feedback, and there have been many new iterations of the class.
Today’s version is a built from scratch version of the class but one that benefits from the Critical Role DM’s improved understanding of balance and design.
The main changes? The secondary ability score focus moves from Wisdom to Intelligence since the magic of hemocraft is more arcane than it is natural. Mercer says there have been massive rebalancing throughout the class.
The 12-page download costs US8.00 and all funds raised will go towards the Australian bushfire relief efforts. This follows on from a very large bundle deal at the DMs Guild called Fight Fires With Games that allows gamers to spend $150 to scoop nearly $2K worth of titles.
