Geek Native launched on Patreon in the middle of 2019. The goal was two-fold; to allow people who run adblockers to support the site and to invest in the RPG community.
At launch, all the funding goals channelled money back into the hobby; either buying DriveThruRPG vouchers to encourage more RPG purchases or commissioning an article or art from a creator.
Patreon then launched their “Special Offers” program and Geek Native started to give away gifts to backers. You can now find an archive of the Geek Native gift program on the site.
Freebies are good. Gifts that automatically support the community because they’ve been bought from indie RPG designers or makers, and other creators are even better.
So, for 2020, the Geek Native Patreon has been restructured ever so slightly to add one more tier (the Geek Quaestor) and explicitly connect those tiers to gifts.
Geek Native will continue to give gifts out in 2020, and they’ll be a mixture of knick-knacks you probably wouldn’t buy for yourself, digital downloads from the hobby or even physical goodies. The site will remain free to use with no content locked behind paywalls.
Programs like the RPG Publisher Spotlight are unaffected and all backers can continue to vote in the polls. No tier has been downgraded.
