As Geek Native’s regular Friday round-up of RPG news was being compiled, the news was breaking of another D&D retail leak revealing a new setting. It became the first link in the RPG news from around the web.
What’s D&D new setting?
The setting is a Magic: The Gathering plane called Theros. It’s inspired by ancient Greece.
A Pantheon of gods is very active in Theros. As the official Theros page on the M:tG site says;
Theros is ruled by an awe-inspiring pantheon of gods. Mortals tremble before them, feel the sting of their petty whims, and live in terror of their wrath. It is a plane where barbaric, cave-dwelling minotaurs descend on wayward travelers. Giants stalk the land, drawing strength from the terrain on which they tread. At sea, massive krakens prowl its depths, and sirens lure its sailors to their demise.
The front cover of the leaked book has the subtitle;
Clash with the gods of Theros in this campaign sourcebook for the world’s greatest roleplaying game.
How did Mythic Odysseys of Theros leak?
It wasn’t Amazon this time. It was the publisher Penguin Random House who revealed the book here, before removing the page.
You can, however, still see the page in Google’s cache, even though several days have passed.
As a side note, and as SEOs will tell you, this means Wizards of the Coast did the right thing by republishing content over the old URL when they removed the Love Cleric from Unearthed Arcana. By republishing, Google accepts the new content rather than keeping a copy of the old.
What’s the creepy cinematic?
The latest expansion for Theros is Theros Beyond Death. In this Magic: The Gathering set the focus is on the Lord of the Dead who rules the Underworld and your battle to break free from death and become a hero reborn.
The powerful figure that appears to be manipulating events in that trailer isn’t one of the gods of Theros. This is the planeswalker Ashiok.
Ashiok came to Theros to harness power, is it believed, perhaps to feed off the fear of the gods generated by the mortals of the plane.
When is Mythic Odysseys of Theros out?
According to the Penguin Random House page, the book will have an official release date of May 19, 2020.
It has a suggested retail price of $49.95.
