Months after the second edition of The One Ring was confirmed, after Cubicle 7 had secured permission to actually call it The Lord of the Rings RPG, they surprised fans and announced they would drop the project.
Why? An undisclosed issue with partner and rights owner, Sophisticated Games.
Sophisticated Games have found a new home for the book. Free League Publishing, the company behind Tales from the Loop, Mutant: Year Zero, Forbidden Lands and Alien will be picking up the license and producing a new edition of the game.
Free League’s CEO Tomas Härenstam told press;
We are thrilled to be working with Sophisticated Games and Francesco Nepitello to bring to life a new edition of The One Ring and its 5E iteration. We grew up with J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic works and we’re huge fans of the original version of the game. We have a very similar approach to game design as Francesco and we’re convinced that we can create something truly special together.”
Sophisticated Games’ MD Robert Hyde added;
Free League shares all our values. Values which are vital in interpreting the most extraordinary fantasy world ever created, one that is of enduring interest throughout the world in every language. Working with Free League’s highly talented team we look forward to continuing the work we began a decade ago, with publication of The One Ring,”
Francesco Nepitello and Marco Maggi are returning to the project as author and game designer.
The agreement is in effect from 1st of June, 2020, and after that, we might hear more about the project.
