Play It Forward is an initiative from Onebookshelf, Wizards of the Coast, White Wolf and Fantasy Grounds. Until the 17th of May, OBS, Wizards, White Wolf, Fantasy Grounds and affiliates will receive 0% commission on anything sold at the Storytellers Vault or the DMs Guild. Instead, the content creators get 100% of the RPG supplement or accessories price tag.
The goal of Play It Forward was to help these indie publishers through financially tough times, and it has had at least one public and remarkable success.
Writer, streamer and podcaster Celeste Conowitch shared on Twitter that the effort had been enough to pay her rent. The result? Celeste has at least one more month being able to carry on as a full-time RPG consultant.
It feels like a modest goal, but the human relief is palatable and significant. It’s a reminder that events like this do work, do make a difference and perhaps a reminder of the cash the companies funding these two weeks of May are giving up.
Chris Bissette, another indie creator, is edging closer towards a new laptop. Laptops, of course, are the device on which many of these supplements are created in the first place.
All around Twitter, there is evidence of small publishers, artists and authors appreciating the boost.
Meanwhile, game buyers took the chance to make the most off 20% available off many of the products in those stores knowing it was an excellent time to buy.
