Several years ago, Maform Design put together this concept for a high altitude (over 22 km) airship.
More recently, design blog Yanko noticed and spied one of the possible alternative uses “to distribute wi-fi”. Imagine that, a giant airship hovering in the sky miles above and beaming down signals. Yeah, the internet reacted.
The S.H.A.R.K. is designed so that it can stay afloat for 168 hours at a time (not sure if that makes it a persistent enough platform for wi-fi) and carry 30 kg.
The design actually mixes traditional airship with airplane features so that it can hold its position even if it gets windy.
As it happens, the S.H.A.R.K. airship isn’t the only clever flyer Maform has designed. If the airship feels a bit like super villain to you then perhaps the Lift Aircraft is more like plucky young superhero squad.
