The inevitable has happened; Gen Con 2020 has been cancelled. A statement from the giant convention’s organisers begins;
It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the cancellation of Gen Con 2020 this August in Indianapolis. The safety and health of our attendees, exhibitors, and staff are of the utmost importance to us, and we cannot in good conscience host a gathering of thousands while doing so could threaten the health of so many.
The organisers are understandably worried. The 14 person team is at risk, and they are asking people who purchased badges for Gen Con 2020 to roll them on to Gen Con 2021. If you can’t do that, then there are refund instructions available.
The pop-up events for Gen Con have also been cancelled.
Essen, likely to be the only tabletop convention larger than Gen Con, cancelled over the weekend and waited until today to announce SPIEL.digital their online alternative.
Gen Con isn’t hanging around. Gen Con Online has already been announced, and it will stick to the original dates of July 30 to August 2.
Gen Con will return to Indianapolis on August 5 to August 8 in 2021.
