Designer Monte Cook was to be the lead designer of D&D 5e but left Wizards of the Coast after disagreements with the company.
Since then his company Monte Cook Games has found success with the Cypher System and RPGs like Numenera.
Now the circle begins to close as Numenera’s setting, The Ninth World, will have a 5e-compatible settings book. You’ll soon be able to use D&D’s system to adventure in the future-fantasy of Numenera.
They say there have been eight worlds before ours. Eight times the people of this planet, over vast millennia, built their civilizations, reaching heights we cannot even fully imagine now. They spoke to the stars, reshaped the creatures of the world, and mastered form and essence. They built cities and machines that have since crumbled to dust, leaving only their barest remnants.
Interestingly, we’re told that a copy of Arcana of the Ancients isn’t needed, but is recommended.
Arcana of the Ancients, which came out last month, is also 5e compatible and Monte Cook, Bruce R. Cordell and Sean K. Reynolds “science-fantasy” sourcebook for 5e. The Ninth World is a science-fantasy setting. There’s a free preview of Arcana of the Ancients too.
