About ten monsters after a man burnt down Kyoto Animation’s Studio 1 and killed 36 people, police in Japan have made an arrest.
The suspect is Shinji Aoba, who is 41 and has been kept in hospital for the past several months. He too was severely burned in the attack. There’s actually capital punishment in Japan. Aoba will have to be found guilty and have been in a stable mental state at the time of the crime for that to be considered.
Kyoto Animation has commented on the arrest, except it’s a bit of a no-comment other than to push for the full weight of the law.
In regards to the accused, we have no additional comment. All that matters is his actions and their results. Regardless of how he may try to excuse his actions, or what remorse he may speak of after the fact, our friends whose lives were taken will not come back, nor will it help the wounds of our injured friends heal. Bereaved families and friends now have to face a permanently changed reality, as must we [at Kyoto Animation].
As a company, we obviously agree with prosecutors pursuing the maximum culpability that the law will allow.”
