The popular Azgaar’s Fantasy Map Generator has had two very significant updates.
If you’re not familiar with Azgaar, then this map maker deep-dive Geek Native did back in 2018 might have some value left as an introduction to the free tool.
With the latest updates, it is now possible to use the map-maker to generate a campaign world from scratch or custom design it, add cities and locations, add military units and then have them battle.
Military Forces were added to the generator in the 1.3 update. You can generate and track fantasy, modern or ancient units.
Battle Simulator was added in the 1.4 update. The system can help you calculate, with a degree of random, what the results would be if two rival units of military forces clashed.
Azgaar Fantasy Map Generator isn’t a computer game. It’s a tool for Gamemasters and Dungeon Masters. You might be tracking the events in the world your RPG is set in, a world filled with empires, kingdoms or rival city-states. While your tabletop campaign zooms into to focus on the success or failure of a few individual heroes, you can now keep track of the fortune of the empire, kingdom or city-state they might be fighting for.
You could have a scenario in which your players have to try and persuade a merchant fleet captain to ferry units of allied troops over the sea in time to support your army and now, with Azgaar, you can see what happens with or without those allies in the battle. Just one example of many.
For me, it means I can track what’s happening to empires and city-states that are not currently the focus of the plots attention. If I move troops away from a border in response to in-game activties then perhaps a plucky third power tries their hand to invade, perhaps it goes well, and now there’s a whole new juicy plot strand to explore.
While Azgaar’s is free; there is a $5 Patron to consider. Taking part gives you access to Discord benefits and keeps Azgaar online and free to use.
